Outdoor Clothing test 1 - out in heavy rain!

Well, perfect weather for playing in the rain!  2/5 of my class have now tested Juliet Robertson's outsdoor clothing box
 http://www.creativestarlearning.co.uk/blog/try-before-you-buy-outdoor-clothing-boxes.aspx

Here are a selection of comments so far...the children have been very honest!

Try Before You Buy Outdoor Clothing Boxes
Today I went out to play in the playground with a muddy puddles jacket 9-10yrs it was quite cosy and definitely waterproof.  I had on Abeko waterproof trousers they kept you warm but the company need to make the trouser legs wider because they were tight and I have got quite slim legs. It was really good fun and i would definitely do it again.
Today I went outside to do a waterproof test. I wore the set of spindrift trousers and jacket size 11/12. They were very comfortable and warm after a bit. the downside was it wasn’t very waterproof so I got very wet, but it was so fun I would love to do it again!
I tried a lime green Elka waterproof outfit in a test and the outfit passed. It was a size 150 and it was very comfortable to wear. It is nice and bright and the hood fitted well. The footstrap was uncomfortable while running and playing on equipment but overall it was the perfect waterproof outfit!
I tried a pair of result trousers sized 13-14 They were really good and waterproof and I never got wet inside. The jacket I tried was a storm dri junior sized 11-12. The jacket was also really good and also kept me dry.
I wore an orange coloured ELKA jacket and the size was 140. I thought it was quite warm but i am not so sure it would last in worse weather. It was very waterproof but the colour wasn’t very nice.
I was wearing a pair of black Abeko trousers size 140 with a Storm Dri red waterproof jacket size 7-8. My trousers were comfortable and stopped me from getting wet where as my jacket wasn’t the best I've ever worn it got me soaked and after that experience my arms were cold for the rest of the day

Outdoor clothing trial 1 - a rainy day!

Groups of 5 went outside with Katie, a PSA to play in the playground and see which clothing kept them dry!

IT WAS A VERY WET DAY...

EVEN PRIMARY 7S LOVE THE PUDDLES

COULDN'T KEEP THEM AWAY

FASHION SHOOT POSE

JUMP!

FASHION SHOOT 2

 VERY, VERY WET...

THEY TESTED THE SLIDE - ONLY ONE WET BOTTOM!

MUDDY PUDDLES - EVEN MORE FUN!

The pupils then gave their feedback to Juliet via her website and overall they were very positive, with the clothing comfortable, warm and keeping them dry on an extremely wet day. I took home and washed one pair of trousers tonight which got particularly muddy and they have washed well and are drying fairly quickly.  All the clothing from the group who went out in the morning was dry long before the time the next group went out in the afternoon.

More trials to follow including a fashion show!

Outdoor clothing and CPD

Well - been a bit of an inside week!  Rain everyday stopped us going out for athletics this week as the field was so wet.

I am looking forward to Monday when Juliet Robertson is coming to show my class a box of outdoor clothing, which they are going to have fun trying out and deciding what works  best.

Then on Monday evening I have session 2 of an outdoor CPD course I am running where the participants are all bringing an outdoor lesson they tried in term 2 or 3 with their own classes, to share with the whole group.  I am really looking forward to hearing all the ideas and discussing how the lessons went.

More outdoor news soon...

Update

With my home broadband being down for over 2 weeks I've not been able to post recently so here's an update from the last couple of weeks of term...

We made up some aboriginal song lines in the woods which was great fun, with songs made up about travelling through our woods from big stones to trees with three trunks to the "tree with green leaves" etc - great for work on giving accurate directions.  Sadly only one child could actually identify the "tree with green leaves" when I asked them for its name - it is a holly tree!  We spoke about how native people had names for all the plants and animals like we do but they could name most of them while nowadays few younger people can.  It was an interesting discussion and we are going to keep working on identifying and naming wildlife around the school.

With the amazing sunny weather we looked at light last week with shadows being a fun activity - some P7s had never drawn round shadows before...

This child wanted to make a cross as we had been studying Easter!

This lead on to some interesting work with sundials, lenses etc...

We used special sunlight paper to make pictures of shadows which they really enjoyed - we took a bucket of water out with us to fix the pictures in and then let them dry in the sun while we (yes, me too!) rolled down the grassy banks in the playground - so much fun!

We had an Easter egg hunt in the woods, looking for plastic eggs - inside, not chocolate, but clues to the Easter story which we then discussed, while sitting in a circle in our favourite part of the woods - yes having not been in the woods much before this year, my class now have a favourite part!

We also made nests in the woods to tie in to technology work we have been doing.

They all decided birds must be really clever to build nests as it was hard to make them strong!

It's been a fun term and I'm looking forward to more outdoor work after the holidays...
